# How to read a record — U.S. employers whose SBA loan was charged off

> What the record is, what the status means, and what is left out.

## How to read these records

### Which employers

Six tests, all from the SBA's 7(a) and 504 loan files: the loan status is “Charged Off”; the charge-off date is in
2019 or later; the lender reported 50 jobs or more supported by the loan; the borrower is a corporation, LLC or
partnership — not an individual; its name carries a company word (Inc, LLC, Corp, Company…) and is not a professional
corporation (PC, PA, PLLC), so that no person's name is published; and it is not in health care, social assistance or
education (NAICS 61 and 62). A business with two loans appears once, with the larger number of jobs. A business
already listed on the PPP site is not repeated here.

### What “charged off” means

The SBA wrote the loan off as a loss after the borrower stopped paying and collection ended. It is often the sign
of a business that closed or went bankrupt — but not always: some were sold or restructured.

### Jobs supported

The jobs created plus the jobs retained, as estimated by the lender on the loan application. The SBA says it does
not review, audit or validate these numbers. It is not today's headcount, and not necessarily the peak.

### Record ID

The SBA file carries no public loan number. The record ID is built by this site from the program, the borrower's
name and ZIP code and the approval date; it is stable from one update to the next, but it is not an SBA number.

### What is not here

Any amount. Street addresses: only the city and state. The lender's name. Owners' names. Individuals and
sole proprietors. Loans charged off before 2019.

**Do you control the records of a company that has closed?**

The internal data of a company that employed 50 people or more (Slack or Microsoft Teams archive, documentation, project histories) may still have value after it has stopped operating.

[Check whether this company’s data qualifies →](/pro.md) We are paid by the buyer if a partnership is signed, never by the company. Whether personal data in those archives can be transferred is a legal question for whoever controls them. Not affiliated with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
